A Mozart opera. A Kardashian Musical. At the same time.
In 2011, Kim Kardashian televised her fairytale wedding to NBA basketball star Kris Humphries... 72 days later she filed for divorce. This spectacular Kardashian failure is just one of three iconic marriages to collapse on stage at once in this brisk, joyous and ambitious take on Mozart's The Marriage of Figaro.
It's a familiar set-up: a young couple, in conversational pop, are arguing about what to watch on TV: The Marriage of Figaro (in traditional classical opera) or Keeping up with the Kardashians (a slick electronic musical). The three increasingly combine until a show-stopping genre-defying final number, which sees the three worlds meeting, and then lovingly tearing each other apart.
Three squabbling couples, three genres of music, and the biggest problem of all: how to love what you think you hate?
